Canadian four-piece Ye Goat-Herd Gods, Calgary’s masters of dark metal music, find inspiration for their songs in history, Mesopotamian mythology, and Romantic era poetry. The band’s name derives from the 1593 poem “Ye Goatherd Gods” by Sir Philip Sidney. YGHG is the brainchild of founder and guitarist/songwriter Jeanie Keebler; by 2015, vocalist/guitarist Gord Olson, drummer Matt Telgen, and bassist Matt Riley had joined to become a live band. The music blends melodic heavy metal with a vocal style reminiscent of the lid being slid off a stone coffin by the undead resting within.
